Light-Rail Expansion
“I can promise you the great rush of development going on in North Natomas right now is not in anticipation of the line; it’s despite it,” says Frisch. “Folsom certainly isn’t developing all that it’s doing because of light-rail and Elk Grove and North Natomas would be booming if there were no anticipated light-rail.”
Pedestrian Friendly
Rex Albright, CEO and executive director of Rancho Cordova’s chamber of commerce, prefers the term “string of pearls” when describing the future appearance of Folsom Boulevard, the city’s main and mostly strip-mall thoroughfare.
The city plans to make the boulevard’s entire length more pedestrian-friendly and add more north-south bus connections. “The money is already there,” Albright says. “It was raised by the county when Rancho Cordova was still unincorporated.”
Early this year, a major construction project commences directly across Folsom Boulevard from the Mather Field/Mills light-rail station. Depending on whom you ask, it’s either called Cordova City Center or Mills Crossing. By whichever name, it marks the city’s first foray into transit-oriented development.
Tenants Wanted
Samuel Fong, general partner of the Lily Company, the Sacramento-based developer of a three-story commercial building fronting on Folsom Boulevard, believes the retail space might be good for a coffee shop, mid-level restaurant or convenience service, such as a dry cleaning outlet.
