Light-Rail Extensions Prompt Heavy Development Along RT's New Lines

     At last, light-rail service is reaching some of the fast-growing communities leading to the outer edges of metropolitan Sacramento and is spurring ambitious transit-oriented, mixed-use development around many station points. 
     In September 2003, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) inaugurated service to South Sacramento with a six-mile line connecting downtown Sacramento and Meadowview Road.
     The summer of 2004 saw three miles of track go into service along Folsom Boulevard, between Mather Field Road and Sunrise Boulevard, giving Rancho Cordova three new light-rail stations.
     By October 2005, the eastbound line will continue along Folsom Boulevard into Folsom’s historic Sutter Street near downtown, with stops along the way at Hazel Avenue, Iron Point Road and Glenn Drive, complete with large park-and-ride lots.
     Construction begins in 2007 to extend the southbound line to Cosumnes River College. RT is looking north too, planning a connection from downtown Sacramento, through North Natomas, to Sacramento International Airport.
