However, there is a dark side at Blue Diamond. For years it has been battling the International Longshore and Warehouse Union over organizing workers. Last year the company was fined by the National Labor Relations Board for more than 20 labor law violations, including firing two workers (who were subsequently rehired) for union activity. For its part the company says it is willing to hold an immediate union election. But the labor movement wants to wait until a new, easier standard can take effect — hoping the Employee Free Choice Act (strongly supported by organized labor) will pass after next year’s elections. Blue Diamond is on the front lines of this battle.
The company’s future looks bright, with three potential caveats: unpredictable weather, labor troubles, and a possible oversupply of almonds.
But with Blue Diamond almonds being eaten in Beijing, New Delhi, London, Paris, Barcelona, Sydney, Seoul and hundreds of other cities around the world — and with Oprah and Dr. Phil singing the praises of their health benefits — it’s harvest time on C Street
