You have a right to cancel a contract without penalty if you move 25 (or more) miles away from the club or if you become disabled. Lifetime-membership contracts are illegal in California. In fact, contracts for more than three years are not allowed. If you want out but signed up to have monthly dues and fees paid via electronic transfer of funds from your bank checking or savings account, be sure to pull that plug.
Beyond a usual three-day cancellation clause, if you want to cancel a contract, you’re required to give a 30-day notice to the club, which may charge a penalty of up to $100. Visit California’s Department of Consumer Affairs website at www.dca.ca.gov to download its “Guide to Choosing a Health Club.”
