The choices for celebrating New Year’s Eve are many. Some people like large parties; others consider them no fun at all. It can be a night for an intimate dinner in front of the fire, an evening reminiscing with close friends, or a time to dress up, join the masses and celebrate on the town. The beauty of New Year’s is that it’s an easy holiday, and you have carte blanche to design it your way. If you’re staying in Sacramento this year, here are a few ideas to help you create what just could become an annual tradition.
Throw Another Log on the Fire
The crazed holiday season has come to an end, and for many that alone is reason enough to celebrate New Year’s Eve. If you decide this is a night better spent at home with a special dinner and your significant other, it doesn’t have to be elaborate. If it’s just the two of you dining late, you may want to order special appetizers or entrées from your favorite restaurant or select gourmet items from specialty food stores that both of you love. No matter what kind of a year you’ve had, this is an evening to splurge — even a little. Visit William Rolle for smoked salmon, oysters or foie gras (Rolle Salmon and Seafood, 455-9140, 5357 H St.). A smaller version of his parents’ much larger store and café in Lyon, France, Rolle’s is the place for authentic French food. Have a good bottle of chilled champagne to kick off the evening while you kick off your shoes.
You might prefer to enjoy the evening with another couple with whom you have shared many memories over the years. Should it be Italy or the Caribbean next year? Maybe it’s a pact to spend at least one night a month together over the coming year. We schedule our business meetings; we should try to schedule time for our closest friends, too.
