1. Vision. First, figure out your mission. “You need to be able to diagnose, formulate and communicate a very clear vision of what the organization should be doing.”

2. Communication. Next, make sure your employees understand the vision. “You’ve got to figure out what the job is and be able to communicate to everyone in the organization.”

3. Motivation. Give employees a reason to pursue that vision. “You have to be able to reach people both on a rational, intellectual basis, as well as reach their hearts. You’ve got to inspire people to come to work every day, energized.”

4. Walk the talk. “You can’t just tell people you have to go do something. You’ve got to be there yourself visibly, doing what you want other people to do.”

5. Sense of humor. “I think you have to keep a sense of humor — both for your own sanity and in just dealing with people. Don’t take yourself too seriously.”
