The 2005 WNBA champion Sacramento Monarchs finally made the big time (forget bringing the first hoops crown to the city). The entire team, including coaches and staff, has made it onto a Wheaties box, the first to honor a whole championship team, and only the second to tie into the WNBA.
The special-edition commemorative package, distributed nationally last month, reportedly flew off region grocery shelves like a Ticha Penicheiro pass, which is good for General Mills, but has the championship translated into much business for the Maloof brothers’ Monarchs?
Danette Lieghton, VP of Monarchs Business Development, would not give specific numbers, but says the franchise has already surpassed last year’s season ticket sales. The team also finished first in the WNBA in merchandise sales. “Winning the championship allowed for far more exposure than we’d had before—in the region and beyond,” adds Lieghton. “We’ve also had a big increase in community appearances for the players like Kara Lawson and Yolanda Griffith, and with the league’s 10th anniversary next year, we will be walking through more doors than ever.”
Wallace-KuhlMakes Landmark Decision
Faced with major staff expansion (90 people in the past year and a half), geotechnical engineering firm Wallace-Kuhl & Associates Inc. has been desperate for new corporate digs.
Hence, the firm’s recent purchase of the landmark California Trucking Association Building at 3251 Beacon Blvd. which will allow Wallace-Kuhl to remain in West Sacramento. The current Industrial Blvd. headquarters will house a lab and the inspection and earthwork services departments once the new site is ready in mid-2006.
