TV Maven Wrestles Two Channels

It’s 9 a.m. and the staff of “Good Day Sacramento” bustles about KMAX, the local UPN TV station. A seven-piece mariachi band plays while teenage girls in wedding gowns dance across the traffic map. A chef in chili pepper pants demonstrates Middle Eastern cuisine. Amid the chaos, morning show hosts make time to check in with a dispatched personality in Sausalito, who waits to catch a glimpse of a reported skinny-dipper swimming laps in the bay.
    From a sterile corner office, general manager Bruno Cohen orchestrates the carefully planned madness.
“(The show) is informational, but in a different way,” Cohen says. TV viewers looking for a traditional hard news show are likely to change the channel, Cohen admits, but adds that those looking for a community focus with humor tune to “Good Day Sacramento.”
    A typical day for Cohen, 54, is one that’s different than yesterday. His workload doubled in April when KMAX’s parent station, Viacom Inc., bought CBS-affiliate KOVR-Ch. 13 from Sinclair Broadcasting.
    Cohen says he copes by working twice as fast.
