Founder's Note: December
Full Speed Ahead
By Warren Smith
The most important thing we can do in our jobs and lives is to get the wrong people off our train and get the right ones on it. Change is difficult, and not everyone has the courage to make what is often a gut-wrenching decision for the sake of progress and harmony.
But to its credit, the Sacramento City Council made a bold move to replace City Manager Bob Thomas. The ramification of the council’s collective effort to create change will likely be a recipe for success for the region in the coming years. I can’t believe I’m saying this, as I have certainly been the recipient of government inertia, but I do believe the city council’s recent decision puts our core city at a great advantage.
Ray Kerridge, the City of Sacramento assistant city manager in charge of the Development Services Department, as well as transportation, economic development and utilities, is now serving as the interim city manager. Ray is transforming city government into a competent steward of its citizens’ resources and a facilitator of progress. He is the right person for the train.
Sacramento is going through a metamorphosis and has an incredible opportunity to reinvent what it is and what it wants to be. And, with more than 100,000 people each year moving to the region over the next 10 years, we better get it right. Making the right decisions now creates the opportunity to make our city one of the best in the world.
I applaud the Sacramento City Council for its LEADERSHIP. The members recognized who is right for the train and made the hard call. Now we can all get to work making Sacramento a great place to live, work and play.
