“There is no single magazine serving the U.S. Vietnamese market, yet the Vietnamese love to read,” Nguyen says. “I see our work as providing information that enriches their lives and helps them prosper.”
Of course, that doesn’t come without some cost in his personal life. He works 80 hours a week and is traveling more as he tries to expand the magazine’s reach.
“The magazine is doing well, and I credit my co-workers for much of that, but success to me is when I complete all my projects, and I’m happily married. I have a lot of work to do on the magazine, and I’m still single, so I’m far from it,” he says.
In five years, Nguyen expects the magazine to be well-established across the United States and hopes to be involved in original programming for TV.
That kind of five-year outlook is something all this year’s Whiz Kids have in common.
Michelle Sprekelmeyer
That’s especially true for Michelle Sprekelmeyer, who plans to run for public office.
Sprekelmeyer, 31, works as a field representative for Assemblyman Roger Niello (R – Fair Oaks). It’s a perfect gig for any would-be candidate. “I was taught very early that networking and community involvement is important,” says Sprekelmeyer. “It helps you, and it helps the people you work for.”
