Success Is a Side Effect

For Prosper’s second batch of Whiz Kids in the Sacramento Metro Market, being successful isn’t a goal, it’s a side effect. Words such as “youth” and “inexperience” simply won’t stand in their way. Meet the leaders of tomorrow who are shaping their companies, industries and communities today.

Take Richard Nguyen, a Vietnamese-American who came to the United States with nothing at the age of nine. Today, at 33, he has launched “Saigon TV,” a Vietnamese news program on Comcast cable, helped organize a Vietnamese Chamber of Commerce, and published BN Magazine, a Vietnamese/English publication reaching 20,000 Vietnamese homes in five states.
     “I’ve always had a passion for media,” says Nguyen, who got a degree in mechanical engineering. “At the same time, I see a huge need to inform and educate the Vietnamese community in the United States.”
     He started the magazine in 2003, primarily as a tool to help the local Vietnamese community with homeownership. The first issue was a 32-page, black-and-white publication, a far cry from the 144-page full-color magazine it is today.
     Nguyen is working hard to take the magazine national, to ultimately serve the estimated 1.5 million Vietnamese homes across the country.
