and a Step Back in Time at Placerville

Remember the squeak of wooden floors as you shopped the aisles and bins of the hometown hardware store?    
    Despite the proliferation of Lowe’s, Orchard Supply, Home Depot and other big-box home-improvement operations that have pushed many small hardware stores out of business, in Placerville you can step and squeak into the past at the Placerville Hardware Store. Now well into its second century, it’s the undisputed oldest hardware store west of the Mississippi. Established in 1852 at its present location — a few doors from the Hangtown Grill — the store changed ownership approximately eight times beforeGeorge Fausel purchased it in 1952.
    The current owners are GeorgeFausel’s nephew, David Fausel, andhis wife, Deanna, who are dedicatedto preserving the store’s originalambiance, which stems largely from its 6,500-square-foot lower level that showcases thousands of items from floor to ceiling.
