On a Tank of Gas: December
A PAWS That Refreshes
and Folsom’s ‘Bite-Size’ Zoo
by Art Garcia
Getting your family acquainted with nature and up close to wild animals doesn’t require going on safari or taking a jungle river cruise. All it takes is a regional road trip.
Drive 25 miles south from Sacramento on Highway 99 to Galt and visit PAWS, the Performing Animal Welfare Society’s 30-acre sanctuary. For black bears, monkeys, a pair of tigers, wolves, foxes, coyotes and mountain lions, visit suburban Folsom. The PAWS facility for abandoned or abused performing animals and victims of the exotic animal trade live “in peace and contentment ... a permanent home where animals come first,” as the nonprofit organization describes its habitats.
“Every animal has a history,” says Wendy Choat, a PAWS customer-relations representative. The PAWS refuges provide “a great education for children, so they know not to take in baby coyotes or mistreat animals.”
