Lucky Enough to Employ a “Whiz Kid?”  Handle with Care

by Warren Smith

The cover story for this issue of Prosper is about a very encouraging segment of the Sacramento Metro Market.  We call them “whiz kids,” young business men and women packed with ambition, powered by desire and picked by their bosses and companies as today’s good bets to be tomorrow’s leaders. Prospersurveyed local area companies and organizations of all sizes, inviting nominations of their own shop’s rising stars. Those featured in this month’s cover story are the “winners.”
It’s no coincidence that Prosper’s super achievers find time for philanthropic and community involvement, despite long hours at work and young families at home.  Prosper writer Don Lipper tells us in Corporate Giving: Who’s Making the Money Here? (page 36)  that “giving back” pays big dividends towards a promising career. He quotes KVIEDavid Hosley as saying, “The same type of person involved in the board of a nonprofit will be a leader in their community. You can spot them in their 20s.”
Ranon Maddox, mentioned in Lipper’s piece, will probably fulfill Hosley’s prediction. A financial service professional and volunteer treasurer for Sacramento Urban League’s young professionals group, he gets deep satisfaction from volunteering. He also admits that volunteering is helping his career.  He knows connecting in the nonprofit world builds relationships, the key to business success.
Prosper Whiz Kids, 2004 is the first of such surveys the magazine will undertake annually to highlight those who deserve the center-stage spotlight.  This year’s Whiz Kids story reflects a main objective of our new publication — to alert our readers in advance about business, finance, investment, innovation and the people behind them.
Part of that objective includes uncovering the unknown or little known. Each month, Prosper introduces new companies we call Baby Blue Chips. (page 21)  We feature one of 10 companies that financial experts in our region consider the small companies with the most promise of becoming successful big companies.
Our whiz kids selections are similarly about emergence — uncovering tomorrow’s leaders today.  They still may be unheralded, but all are worth watching and following as their careers grow and develop.
