When automotive pioneers of the 1890s tapped a then-abundant but underutilized resource — gasoline — they unleashed a revolutionary change in “personal” transportation habits.
Similarly, Lipomics, located in West Sacramento, has tapped the abundant and underutilized information available through lipid metabolism to explain complex disease processes, aiding progress toward “personalized medicine.”
The discoveries being made through lipomic profiling constitute a potentially transformative breakthrough for determining metabolic disorders and assessing patient response to treatment. By studying and analyzing lipid metabolism, four-year-old Lipomics Technologies (

Biochemical ‘Snapshots’ Lipids also are involved in the aging process and display biochemical patterns that can reveal the presence of cancer, immune system deficiencies and neurodegenerative disorders. Lipomics can generate biochemical “snapshots” of patient or medical trial participant responses to drugs or changes in diet. Lipomics has created what co-founder Steven Watkins, president and chief scientific officer, calls a “bifurcated business:” current sales of analytical services, coupled with a longterm product development strategy.
