Have Pet, Will Travel
APPMA surveys show 377.8 million American pets, a huge potential market that hasn’t gone unnoticed by hotels and resorts, many of which now cater to the family pet. “A couple of years ago, there were very few hotel chains that would allow pets,” Underwood says.
These days, when people pack their suitcases for a vacation, they also pack one for the family pooch. At some hotels, $75 a night gets your dog a private room with a heated floor, feather bed, TV and VCR, room service, including caviar and steak, and a personal dog walker.

Loews, Omni, Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn are among lodging chains offering pet-friendly accommodations. APPMA lists Cendant Corporation Hotel Group as the world’s largest lodging franchisor, with its Travelodge, Howard Johnson and Days Inn pet-friendly hotels.
The Days Inn in Morris, Ill., even hosts a Yappy Happy Hour for four-legged guests in its conference room. You’ll find more information on where and how to travel with your dog here and abroad in Fido Friendly magazine (www.FidoFriendly.com) and in paperback guides available at bookstores.

Dogs accompany their owners at many of Sacramento’s street cafes, but most restaurants still prohibit animals, guide dogs excepted. Fido fast-food drive-through outlets — don’t laugh; they’re coming — may be the only way to dine out with your best friend. Cha Cha’s Doggie Day Care on 57th Street in Sacramento is a canine kindergarten dog-sitting service for working pet owners who refuse to leave their furry kids home alone. Owners gladly pay $5 an hour for their pets to stay at Cha Cha’s, where activities include games, pool splash, story time, arts and crafts (paw painting) and field trips to local parks, ponds or the American River.
