Past windswept roads, abandoned barns and dried paths of former farmland lies the oasis: California’s Delta. Filled with luscious green hills and breezy rest stops, this is country not made for speed.
The Sacramento River divides the land into dozens of fishing towns and island cities. Passing by old metal draw- bridges that sew the valley together, all roads lead to the Delta Mecca of Isleton.
Of the ports o’ call on the way, the best known is the Ryde Hotel, three miles south of Walnut Grove and the nearby historic town of Locke. The Ryde, built in 1927 at the peak of Prohibition and ren- ovated by its current owners, once was owned by the Lon Chaney Jr. family of Hollywood fame.
There are few weekends when the 32-room hotel isn’t booked for a wedding reception or other gala event. “The hotel on the river,” which boasts of being “where history meets hospitality,” offers guests a full menu of activities, ranging from movie screenings, food sampling, golf, river walks and a popular Sunday brunch.
