Tatia Davenport drove up to the Sierra foothills as global vice president of quality and training in the Sacramento office of financial services firm E*Trade Financial Corp.; she came down as the five-year lessee on 5,200 square feet of empty space committed to with a $13,000 deposit.
Such on-the-spot action isn’t for the faint of heart, but the 37-year-old Davenport didn’t climb management ranks in a 14-year corporate career without taking chances or making decisions quickly and confidently.
Late last year, a search for fresh perspective prompted Davenport to take that stress-reliever drive in her 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Curiosity guided the East Sacramentan to the El Dorado Hills exit off Highway 50 to explore the rapidly growing community.
There, she discovered the just-opening Tuscan-style retail and commercial village La Borgata and in it the answer to her dream of finding something different that would break the corporate routine.
“The next company promotion or pay raise wasn’t meaningful to me. I’ve had many ideas in my life - for inventions, new roles within a company, writing books - and of all of them, this one felt right,” says Davenport.
Davenport is now 85-percent owner of The Spa at La Borgata, which since its January 19 opening has grown from 6 to 35 employees. Month-to-month revenue growth is measured in triple digits, and Davenport has replaced her Jeep with a 2001 SL 500 Mercedes convertible, black with tan interior.
