Measure A

Since 1989, local transportation projects have received a significant funding boost from a half-cent sales tax known as Measure A. But the tax is set to expire in 2009 and supporters are already gearing up to ask voters in November to approve a 30-year extension. Whereas a simple majority passed Measure A 15 years ago, new laws require a two-thirds majority to approve new or continuing taxes. Prosper spoke recently with two people who have a lot to say about Sacramento’s trans portation issues: Sacramento County Supervisor Roger Niello and Regional Transit District CEO Beverly Scott.

Prosper: Is Measure A adequate to handle the transportation challenges Sacramento will face over the next 30 years?
Niello: Measure A is only about 20 percent of our total funding, but it is a source of local matching funds that are necessary to qualify for state and federal projects.
