California’s Next Frontier:
Stem Cell Research?

Supporters of embryonic stem cell research (ESCR) say it could hold the key to discovering cures for such deadly diseases as cancer and Alzheimer’s. They want to use taxpayer dollars to make California the hub for all such research in the world.
    Opponents say there’s no scientific proof embryonic stem cells can accomplish that goal and that ESCR is both immoral and fiscally irresponsible.
    Voters ultimately decide the issue by their response to Proposition 71 on the November 2 general election ballot. The proposition calls for a $3 billion bond to fund stem cell research in California, far more than ever committed for a research program by any state.
    Phil Angelides is California State Treasurer and an advocate for public funding of ESCR as a means of creating a significant number of new jobs and tax revenue for the state.
    Dr. H. Rex Greene is an oncologist and the medical director for the Dorothy E. Schneider Cancer Center in San Mateo and the spokesperson for Doctors, Patients and Taxpayers for Fiscal Responsibility, a group of healthcare professionals that opposes spending public money on ESCR.
