The Business of Life

How will you live your life? Will you take control of your world, or will the world control you?

This is at the heart of the new Prosper. We have tried to create a magazine, and a media company, that will help every reader seize the best of life, grab every opportunity, and create a life that works for them. In other words, to succeed in the business of life.

There is no one-size-fits-all prescription for happiness or success. That is why this magazine contains so many different components. There are tips on prosperity and success, profiles of people who’ve chucked it all in and followed their dreams, and a piece on the environmental implications of playing golf. There is insight on how to put money into socially and ecologically sound investments, opportunities to give back to the community, and stories about folks who’ve found a way to get what they want in the midst of big companies.

We have also gathered tools and toys that you should seize, stories about how others are thriving by balancing their work with life, and a look at some of the rewards of prosperity such as state-of-the-art sports cars for green-adrenaline junkies and cool prefab houses that could make great second homes.

There’s also a lot about passion: a scooter aficionado’s love for his two-wheeled rockets; a Catholic monsignor’s view of how his faith and prosperity entwine; a billionaire venture capitalist’s take on what makes a great entrepreneur; and one of the country’s preeminent demographers on the changes in population that are remaking California before our eyes.

At the heart of the issue is a look at the most powerful woman in California, perhaps the country. When Gov. Schwarzenegger made his State of the State speech earlier this year, he used the word “prosperity” dozens of times. We decided to try and figure out what that really means to him. But the more we looked at the First Family — and the more national (even worldwide) popularity the governor gained in recent weeks — the more we realized the real secret to his transformation from doctrinaire Republican to populist democrat was Maria.

So we’ve created a portfolio of stories, photographs and excerpts to provide some perspective on this remarkable woman — one of a collection of astonishing female political figures from California now on the country’s political stage.

Every month we’ll aim to inspire, provoke, challenge, guide and enlighten you. We invite you to come along as we all discover what prosperity means, how we can attract it, and how we can help bring it to others.
