Dean Tokuno, Photographer
(COVER: Send in the Clowns)
“When a magazine calls and says, ‘We have these clowns we want you to shoot,’ I immediately tip my hat back and ask how they want me to rub these clowns out?
“OK, so maybe it wasn’t exactly like that, but 30 years in this business have taught me that shooting clowns isn’t necessarily shooting clowns (although I have photographed some clowns that
I could have shot).
“So we show up for the shoot at a large corporate facility in the region with these clowns in tow. We set up lights. We position the clowns, hoping they don’t chew through their leashes and escape. Jack Gallagher is in the eye of the storm.
“Rubber chickens, boas and reams of paper are flying past Jack’s bewildered face as Judy Collins is screaming ‘Send In The Clowns’ through my iPod. I raise the camera to my eye and think ‘Ahhhh, another day in paradise.’”
When Dean Tokuno is not busy being “an ikura wrapped in seaweed within a quail egg,” he shoots award-winning ad and fashion campaigns.
Jennifer Allen
(Transform Yourself)
“Elizabeth Rindskopf Parker’s enthusiasm for her job as dean of Pacific McGeorge School of Law is infectious — after one of our interviews she actually had me mulling over the idea of getting a law degree.
“And while her plate is very full with all her responsibilities at McGeorge, she and her husband, Bob, regularly make time to go rowing at the River City Rowing Club, where they keep three sculls, all named after ‘Drum,’ her first father-in-law’s WWII submarine. ‘I am particularly proud that I introduced Bob, a sailor of long standing, to rowing,’ she says. ‘Although now he has surpassed me by some little bit.’”
Jennifer Allen is a public affairs consultant and staff writer for the Capitol Morning Report.
Aaron Cheesman
(COVER: Send in the Clowns)
“Back in school, humor was nearly always covert. Part of the fun of wisecracking in the back row was just getting away with it. Then the workplace turned out to be mostly the same thing, but with “Dilbert” cartoons. So it’s gratifying to see business people not just tolerating comedians but actually hiring them to stand out front and address their people. It’s a Cinderella story for class clowns and smart alecks everywhere.”
Aaron Cheesman, copywriter at Crocker/Flanagan and member of the Five Second Rule comedy troupe, actually wants to tell the whole class what’s so funny.
Ashley Difuntorum
After a day of making sure the office is running full steam ahead, Ashley Difuntorum, Prosper administrative assistant, heads home to help her husband, Chris, chase around their 2-year-old son, Seth. Ashley dreams of becoming a novelist and spends hours keeping tabs on the world and chronicling its happenings via her Blackberry. Her other hobbies include tarot-card reading and obsessive Bollywood-movie watching, which explains her ability to help keep the zoo that is Prosper on track.
