As he moved up at Ikea, he found that management encouraged him to continue his education. “I was like, wow, I can do both,” he says. This time, he studied business management with financial support from Ikea — half of his entire college tuition.
Ikea offers all employees $2,500 per year while working on an undergraduate degree and more for those taking graduate classes. While many employers offer help with college tuition (go to page 30 for more on the subject), it is rarer to find it at the retail level.
The European work model and Ikea’s forward-thinking North America President Pernille Spiers-Lopez are given credit for the company’s above-average employee benefits. In addition to tuition assistance, healthcare benefits for part-time workers have won Ikea considerable praise.
Blazek puts it down to enlightened corporate culture. “We believe here that if you’re not happy in your personal life, how can you possibly be happy at work?”
