The Prosperity Portfolio

By Jeffrey S. Young

This month we’ve created an entirely new Prosper: Our first annual Prosperity Portfolio. Producing this special issue devoted entirely to prosperity has been a humbling experience. It began as the simplest of ideas: Ask a broad cross section of people in our region to give us their vision of what prosperity means to them and combine their words with photographic portraits.
Initially, we thought we would have to ask twice as many people as we needed to fill our pages and had our entire company brainstorm hundreds of possible portrait subjects. But nearly everyone we asked to participate agreed, and most were eager to share their ideas about prosperity, happiness and what makes life worth living. So we added more pages to accommodate more people. It was our first inkling we had tapped into a deep and rich vein of feeling among our fellow citizens.
Then we put out calls to every professional photographer we could find in the region. Darcy Totten, our new photo editor and associate managing editor, personally worked with each to show them the caliber of portrait work we wanted. Many responded with some of the finest work of their careers, photographs that are haunting, and powerful, and hopeful. Read full biographies of every person online at prospermag.com.
Managing Editor Michelle Margetts, Elspeth Cisneros, our new assistant editor, and a host of inspired contributing writers, along with art directors Stephanie Butts and Scott Olling and Associate Editor Elizabeth Babbitt, worked long hours to create a package of words, graphics and layout worthy of these images.
The quality of this special edition is due to the exceptional work of our editorial team who conceived, developed, pursued, cajoled, produced, directed and delivered the extraordinary portraits and powerful words that make up this issue. But to the people who generously let us into their hearts and shared their thoughts, we owe our greatest thanks. Now this issue of Prosper belongs to you, our readers. We hope it inspires and exhilarates you as much as it does us.
