Quads on Parade

The U.S. population passed the 300 million mark at the end of 2006 and Sacramentans Martha Orozco and Felix Guadiana did their part, adding four new babies to the population in one fell swoop.
The Orozco quadruplets spent 34 weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, until they passed the 4-pound mark and were transferred to the less intensive facility at Mercy’s Methodist Hospital in South Sacramento.
“It’s amazing to turn around and suddenly have this family,” Orozco marveled.
The Orozco babies, who were brought home in mid-November, were the first quadruplets ever born at a Sacramento-area Mercy hospital. Mercy San Juan’s Level-III NICU annually ranks among the world’s top units in caring for the smallest of newborns.

Small-Business Tip of the Month
Find the Courage to Face Future Demands
By Molly Stuart
“The world leaders in innovation and creativity will also be world leaders in everything else,” says Harold McAlindon, innovation pioneer. He reminds us that business challenges are constantly changing and as our world unfolds in new ways so must we change, anew. Below find some suggestions on how to courageously move through change and grow stronger and happier for having done so:
• Sustainable competitive advantage requires you to out-innovate the competition. Don’t react to change by re-polishing yesterday’s apple. tompeters.com
• The most effective innovation comes from diversity of backgrounds, styles, knowledge, skills, attitudes and, ultimately, ideas. fastcompany.com/online/52/mustread.html
• J.M. Keynes says the problem is not how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind; it is how to get the old, slow thoughts out. econlib.org/library/enc/bios/keynes.html
• People willing to move toward the new, unknown and by definition, innovative, are not overly preoccupied with making mistakes or with social disapproval. en.wikiquote.org/wiki/rollo_may
• Identify the risks and fears of change, articulate coping mechanisms and practice the skills that will help you take action.
• The most important person that reports to you is the one who disagrees with you and can tell you why. Reward them.
• Inequities, disorder and conflict are often the energies that inspire innovation. crinfo.org/booksummary/10137
• Alvin Toffler notes that the illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn. selfhelpmagazine.com/articles/growth/creative.html

Three Cheers for Three Courses:

For those of you looking for enticing entertainment this January, look no further: Some of downtown Sacramento’s finer restaurants are sharpening their knives in anticipation of “Dine Downtown Restaurant Week.” Participating restaurants will offer specially prepared three-course meals during the week of Jan. 13 to 19. The cost? Just $30.
Lisa Martinez, director of marketing and outreach for the sponsoring Downtown Sacramento Partnership, explains, “People are looking to get out of the house, looking for some fun and entertainment once the holidays are over.” The concept is based on a 2004 test run and similar events held in Chicago, Atlanta, New York and San Francisco; Some cities have created signature cocktails for their increasingly popular foodie-driven weeks.
Among the local restaurants signing on are Restaurant 55 Degrees, Spataro, Chops Steak Seafood and Bar, Dawson’s American Bistro and kru. Although there are nearly 400 restaurants and eateries downtown offering the three-course meal for $30, in addition participating restaurants had to be in the heart of downtown and commit to active marketing of the event.
Visit the Downtown Partnership website for a full list of participating restaurants. If you choose to “Dine Downtown” on Jan. 19 make it a complete night and checkout participating art galleries at Sacramento’s Second Saturday Art Walk
