Question
I'm the general manager of a real estate company in Southern California. Six years ago I merged my small company with a well-established company, which has several other owners. I became the general manager of the combined company, reporting to all of the owners.
It became impossible for me to run all of the offices successfully. The partners fight continually and I'm left in the middle of the controversy. Last winter the partners (now seven of them) hired an outside consulting firm to help us with this transition.
The consultants decided I was not the right person for the job and offered me one of the branch manager positions. My present salary is more than the base salary that's being offered. It's hard for me to separate my job as an employee and my role as an owner, where I receive dividends and growth in my stock. All of these changes -- less money, less authority and the fact I'll be reporting to someone else -- have made me think I may need to leave the company. I really love this company and don't want to leave, but I'm not sure how to handle all of these things that have changed.
