Question
I am the executive director of an association located in Sacramento. In the past few years our membership has remained stable, but this year we have seen a rapid decline.
We have a volunteer board of directors. The bylaws require two successive terms but don't have any provisions for how many terms you can serve. Due to the lack of that provision, we continually see the same people over and over on the board. Those people are all well-established in their businesses and can afford to take time off to serve on our various committees and attend our meetings.
But we are not getting any of the younger generation interested in serving on the board or even a committee.
If we can't get these people to join the association and get involved in committees and board membership, our association will cease to exist.
