5:26 a.m. Melissa Simmons, a UC Davis student with a degree in animal science and management and a full time UC Davis Dairy staff member, is halfway through the morning milking in the milking parlor at UC Davis. The 111 cows at the UC Davis Dairy are milked twice a day, producing about 40 gallons per cow per milking.
8:11 a.m. A Cal Aggie Flying Farmers airplane sits ready in the parking area at UC Davis airport for a 9:00AM instrument flight lesson with Stephen Clark and Student Tom Stevenson. UC Davis is the only university in the California system with an airport. Cal Aggie Flying Farmers was established in 1947 by ex-WWII pilots.
8:51 a.m. Nicole Vlahos, UC Davis Firefighter, checks the oil level in the fire engine, she drives at the UC Davis fire station. UC Davis is only one of three universities in the country that has its own fire department and student residency program, which has been operating for 50-plus years with the same requirement, “No experience is necessary.” Of the 500 Students who complete the program, one-third have become professional firefighters.
