When pressed to explain the importance of that, Kidder, 65, gives a glimpse of the outlook grounded in his Sulpician training. “I guess it’s so obvious that I don’t know what I’m not communicating,” he says.
In this bedroom community where commuting to Sacramento is common, one would expect that there would be little interaction within the community. Just the opposite is the case, Kidder says, citing the 1,500 parishioners involved in church-related ministries, such as teaching faith formation classes or working in outreach programs like delivering meals to the needy or confined.
“I find these thirty-somethings and forty-somethings quite generous with their time,” Kidder points out. “It’s not just donations. It’s time and talent, helping others. I always talk about using things and loving people, rather than using people and loving things. Otherwise, things use us.”
